چکیده

When available pasture is greater than 5.5 kg DM/day/100 kg liveweight or post grazing pasture mass is greater than 6-8 cm in height there is no significant increase in liveweight gain in young deer. Feed quality is a problem for summer lactation and it has been shown that the proportion of green leaf in the pasture is closely related to calf liveweight gain. Red clover and the chicory are forages that can increase deer calf growth rate during lactation by about 20% when compared with white clover. Chicory breaks down rapidly in the rumen leading to increased voluntary feed intake. Condensed tannins and lactones in chicory inhibit worm larvae and may lead to a reduction in the requirement for anthelmintic drenching. Dramatic seasonality in the annual cycle of deer antler growth has major consequences for feed requirements. Priority times for maximum feeding are in the spring, late autumn and late winter.

Management and Conservation Note Alternative Feeding Strategies and Potential Disease Transmission in Wisconsin White-Tailed Deer

We conducted experimental feeding using 3 feeding methods (pile, spread, trough) and 2 quantities (rationed, ad libitum) of shelled corn to compare deer activity and behavior with control sites and evaluate potential direct and indirect transmission of infectious disease in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in central Wisconsin, USA. Deer use was higher at 2 of the feeding sites than a...

The Feed Requirements of Adult Red Deer

This paper reviews the feeding requirements of adult red deer from nutritional, management and ecological perspectives. Particular emphasis is placed on the need to balance production objectives in the context of ecological sustainability. Topics such as feeding behaviour, feeding management, the relationship of body condition score to nutritional sufficiency, daily and seasonal feed intake req...

Plastic response by a small cervid to supplemental feeding in winter across a wide environmental gradient

Supplemental feeding for ungulates is a widespread practice in many human-dominated landscapes across Europe and North America, mainly intended to seasonally support populations. Surprisingly, little consideration was given so far to the effect of supplemental feeding on ungulate spatial ecology at a large scale, in management and conservation studies. Analyses of the main ecological drivers in...

Techniques and Technology A Frightening Device for Deterring Deer Use of Cattle Feeders

The ?1 presence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in cattle can negatively impact a state’s economy and cattle industry. In Michigan, USA, wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are a reservoir for reinfecting cattle herds. Although direct TB transmission between deer and cattle is rare, infected deer may contaminate cattle feed. To mitigate this risk, we designed and evaluated a deer-resist...

Feeding and social behavior of fallow deer (Dama dama L.) under intensive pasture confinement.

A population of 110 adult fallow deer kept in an enclosure under very intensive conditions (31.4 deer/ha) was observed for 12 h/d (from 0800 to 2000) for 17 d during the birth season in order to study social and feeding behavior under intensive management. Observations were carried out by a scan sampling technique. The feeding activity of all the deer that were not hidden behind trees or other ...
